Up Getting Ready Riding Balancing Bikes

Every time we come to Damascus for biking, I like to start the rides with this trail.  It's a great warm-up for the fun to come.

Rubi.jpg (301074 bytes) Here's a shot of Rubi in action!  She's smiling and that's good because she really hadn't done much mountain biking prior to this trip.  She had some trepidation about driving 400 miles to go riding with so little experience, but she played along like a trooper!

Also, that's Ben in the back.

Ian works on his foot.jpg (314326 bytes) Ian was plagued this weekend by some mechanical troubles.  Here he's working on the cleat on his shoes for his new TIME pedals.  The first real ride with clipless pedals is always interesting.

In the end, two engineers with master's degrees got it nearly figured out!

(My brother the mechanical engineer would probably add "that's what you get for having EE's do ME work."  That's also probably why he doesn't have permissions to edit the pages...

Vista view from Flat Top.jpg (302197 bytes) Rubi found this shot while Ian worked on his foot.

In the spring and fall when the leaves are down, the views from the high points on the Flat Top trail are spectacular.

Ben loves snow.jpg (177443 bytes)

Believe it or not, it was somewhere between 50-60degF; however, sections of the trail receive direct sunlight for only a short time.  In places the snow was up to about 6" deep.

I had never ridden in snow and found all it's good for is doubling or tripling the weight of your bike and the amount of work you have to do just to move.  By a sadistic quirk of Murphy's Law, it seemed that the snowy sections were almost all up hill!

Here Ben just throws in the towel!  In reality, it probably was easier to just walk...
